Empowering Communities. Building Resilience. Restoring Dignity.
Welcome to Poorvanchal Gramin Vikas Sansthan (PGVS). For over three decades, we have been a beacon of hope, dedicated to transforming the lives of the rural through sustainable development, health interventions, disaster risk reduction, and climate risk management.
From a Clinic to a Movement
Our History
The Seed is Sown
1981: Our journey began with a single step taken by our Founder Secretary, Dr. Bhanu. A native of Gorakhpur and a trained medical practitioner, Dr. Bhanu established a modest clinic in 1981 to provide essential medical services to the underserved rural population of Gorakhpur.
The Realisation
Over the next five years, working on the ground revealed a critical truth: medical aid alone was not enough. To truly uplift the community, we needed to address the root causes of poverty—education, livelihood, and social justice.
A Formal Beginning
1987: A group of like-minded individuals joined hands to formally establish PGVS as a civil society organization. By 1988, with support from the Voluntary Health Association of India (VHAI), and Oxfam India, we launched our first community health program in five rural pockets of Gorakhpur.
Expanding Horizons
1996-98 marked a turning point. With support from major donors, PGVS expanded from health-focused interventions to full-fledged development programs covering education, adult literacy, and governance. Today, we stand as a pillar of strength for flood-affected and vulnerable communities across the region.
Our Objectives
We ensure communities not only survive disasters but emerge stronger. We make efforts for possible immediate relief on the concept of minimum standards, long-term & short-term rehabilitation to mitigate climate disaster risks.
By investing in capacity building, we empower local populations to establish sustainable support systems based on build-back-better concept.
- To sensitize and mobilize people for sustainable development.
- To integrate disaster preparedness into the lifestyles of communities to reduce climate related disaster risks, and vulnerabilities.
- To provide emergency voluntary action during climate disaster situations.
Our Vision
"Establishment of a Peaceful, Just, Aware, and Empowered community."
Our Mission
Mobilization of the community to have critical thinking and action for developmental issues through VASUDEVA (Voluntary Agencies for Sustainable Universal Development and Emergency Voluntary Actions)
